About 20 kids listened in as Ms Porter shared her story of growing up in Tamworth and eventually playing softball for the nation.
“I just told the kids about where I started, how I grew up here and where I’ve been since then,” she said.
Ms Porter said The Youthie was a great asset for the community and she would have appreciated a similar facility when shewas growing up.
“Follow your dreams, do what you love and take every opportunity,” were the key messages she wanted the kids to take away from the talk.
With sport playing a major part in her life, Ms Porter said there were some key life skills that could be obtained from team sports.
“You’re a human being before you’re an athlete,” she said.
“Dedication, hard work and persistence are some qualities you could use in other aspects of life.”
Ms Porter said it was important for the kids to hear a Tamworth success story.
“They needed to hear they could do it and wanted to see someone who has been there and done it,” she said.
The kids threw some curve balls when it came to the Q&A session, including the height of certain athletes Ms Porter met at the Olympics.
Ms Porter was back in town for the Tamworth Regional Council Sports Awards on Thursday.
