About 2.45am on Friday, a 20-year-old Willow Tree man was driving his black Holden Colorado on Werris Creek Road at Duri, when he struck a pig.
The man pulled his car to the side of the road and contacted his parents to pick him up, before falling asleep in the car.
Police have been told that the man woke up to a loud bang and found his vehicle on fire.
The driver was able to get out of the car, and saw a car described as a brown or maroon-coloured Holden Commodore with yellow and black NSW plates driving from the scene.
The man was later taken by his father to Tamworth Hospital where he is being treated for burns to his arms, chest, and face.
His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Police from Oxley local Area Command are investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
