The RSPCA has launched its Choose Wisely campaign, a website that allows people to find local cafés and businesses that use food products approved by the organisation.
Many places already use ethically produced food and are encouraged to sign up.
It’s free to register, and businesses can commit to using at least one of the following: cage-free eggs, free-range chicken and free-range pork – or some combination of the three.
Owner of Cafe2340, Sam Szyc, said she had jumped at the opportunity to join the Choose Wisely campaign.
“We’ve been using farm eggs for years now,” Ms Szyc said.
“It’s a good initiative to know what’s humane and what’s ethical in town.
“I think it will be like Trip-Advisor or BeanHunter ... apps where people are looking for the nearest café where they can get humane food.”
Ms Szyc said the café had made the switch to free-range eggs and chicken about two years ago and had received rave reviews from customers since.
“When we first got them, straight away customers noticed the difference in the taste and colour of the yolk,” she said.
She encouraged other businesses in the area to join the campaign.
“It’s something that customers are becoming a lot more conscious about, so they really are pushing for it,” she said.
