REGIONS from the Greater Hunter to the North West had severe fire danger ratings and the New England had a rating of very high yesterday, with several fires burning in the area.

One of the biggest fires was burning in the Pilliga forest with two aircraft called in from Gunnedah to try to contain the blaze. As at 4.30pm yesterday, more than 300 hectares of NSW forest and national park land had been burned.
Namoi Gwydir Rural Fire Service Superintendent Michael Brookes said the Whirlybrook Trail fire was being controlled.
As well as the aircraft, heavy machinery was putting in containment lines.
“The triple-0 calls came in at 12.44pm and the fire was burning in an easterly direction, but burning a long way from private property,” Superintendent Brookes said.
NSW RFS, NSW National Parks and Wildlife and NSW Forests personnel were working on the fire.
The other major fire yesterday was at Burns Creek, which was being controlled at Cells River Rd, Nowendoc.
It had burned more than 600 hectares.
There was a grass fire on Thunderbolts Way, Yarrowyck, as well, which was under control last night and had burned 11 hectares.
Today, the threat will ease as the Northern Slopes has a very high fire danger, New England is high, North West is very high and the Greater Hunter has dropped to low – moderate due to a cool change coming through.
