Ashford had won the first two criteriums of the new season at Goddard Lane but had to settle for third behind Carrington and Ben Clarke in his hat-trick attempt.
“We had good numbers in A Grade this week – made it a fast race,” Ashford said.
After club president Sam Spokes’s wedding had decimated the fields the week before, the club had 23 riders in three grades on Sunday, Carrington taking a nine-rider A grade, Dave Menzies winning a six-rider B Grade and Peter Nash successful in an eight-rider C Grade over 25mins and two laps.
Carrington said the “A Grade crit was fast”.
“We had a good number and made it a good race,” he said.
“John Freiberg came down from Inverell for a race – that was good because he is a strong rider.
“And with the wind it made it a bit tougher too and made it close in the end.”
Phil Kellaher almost stole the race when his late surge took him almost a full back straight in front.
“It was almost the perfect ride,” Carrington said.
“He was just unlucky two or three of us still had a little bit left in our legs.
“The whole bunch came together around the back straight and that left me close enough to take them a half lap out.”
The Tamworth Cycling Club stages its regular criterium races every Sunday morning at Goddard Lane and welcomes any and all riders to race from 8am.
