Speeding racers to face the charges

TWO men charged with leading police on dangerous vehicle pursuits in relation to two separate incidents in the past week remain in custody.

A 21-year-old man will next face Moree Local Court on Monday for the two high-speed pursuits he allegedly caused along the Newell Highway near Moree last Thursday.

During the first chase, he allegedly approached speeds of up to 240km/h before police terminated it. Later in the day, the second pursuit picked up around Bellata before it was also terminated.

The 21-year-old was later arrested near Narrabri.

At his first court appearance in relation to the matter this week, he pleaded guilty to seven charges, including two under Skye’s law for separate police pursuits, as well as for drink-driving and stealing a motor vehicle.

On Monday afternoon, a 32-year-old Tamworth man was arrested after he allegedly led police on a short vehicle pursuit around the city in busy traffic.

Peter Alan Gehrig was charged with several offences following the five-minute pursuit, including negligent driving and leading police on a dangerous pursuit.

Gehrig was arrested just half-an-hour after the pursuit occurred.

He appeared in Tamworth Local Court this week to answer to the charges.

He was refused bail until a court appearance on Tuesday.
