After a 29-7 win over the Picton pair of Eric Haynes and Graeme Irons in the morning semi-final they took on Merryland’s Gareth Lewis and Neil Burkett.
They had a great start too, leading 12-8 before they “dropped a six” on the 14th end to make it 18-8.
Four ends later and they had edged to a 19-13 lead but steadied to win 23-13.
South Tamworth Bowling Club president Scott Sweeney was delighted for the two players and the club.
“That’s brilliant,” he said of the 10-shot win.
“I know they are different competitions but Wisey and Pud (Nathan Wise and Scott Thorning) won the State Pairs last year and now Nick and Chris have won the Champions of Champions Pairs.
“Two state titles in two years is brilliant for our small club.”
For Herden, the Champion of Champions continues today when he begins the singles side of the competition.
It has been a big few days for the South Tamworth club as Sunday’s Werris Creek Triples Tournament was dominated by South Tamworth teams.
Only a shot separated first and second, with Mark Golledge’s team, consisting of Golledge, Laurie Assef and Brad Hogan pipping clubmates Gordon Cheney, Ken Lachlan and Graeme Nicholls for the title.
They both recorded three wins and a draw, the Golledge -skipped team snagging the $600 prize purse by virtue of their +55 shots with Cheney’s team amassing a +54.
Tony Leonard’s combination flew the flag for the home club, finishing third with three wins and a +48.
14 teams rolled up for the event with each playing four games of eight ends.
It is a big week for the Central North and District Bowling Association with today’s Tamworth City Bowling Club’s annual hams tournament attracting 14 teams.
The CNDBA then sends five teams to Gunnedah on Sunday to play the North West District Bowling Association in an annual representative match.
Herden and Nick Golledge will skip two of the sides.
Ironically they play each other in a semi-final of the South Tamworth Singles on Saturday morning with the winner to play Stu Bayliss in the final.
Bayliss is also a member of Herden’s team at Gunnedah Bowling Club on Sunday.
