THE regional council elections have now been run, won or lost and The Northern Daily Leader gave a good coverage of the event. NDL of Saturday 15 had a number of separate stories on the subject.
The editorial, reflecting favourably on performance of re-elected regional councillors, was a fair appraisal but I wonder if this festival city of ours needs something in addition to good fundamental management.
By way of explanation: the outstanding mayors I have noticed over the past 10 years or more have all been outside of Tamworth. Rudi Giuliani earned great praise for his leadership in the 9/11 New York crisis.
More recently Boris Johnson, mayor of London, brought out the very best in that city during the biggest festival of all, the 2012 Olympic Games. Of course he didn’t mean to get stuck, mid-air, on the zip wire, but it did achieve world wide attention.
NDL September 15 also reported Moree mayor Katrina Humphries was re-elected, receiving “a whopping 47.3 per cent of first preference votes.” I don’t know Cr Humphries personally but I have heard her speak, over the years, mostly on ABC radio, and she does have that entrepreneurial theatrical sparkle which is such a great attribute these days.
Paul Mathews’ photograph of Cr Humphries making a “splash to celebrate the opening of the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre” was true Boris Johnson style and spoke volumes.
