Phillip Morris was behind the wheel of the Ford Fairlane when it collided head-on with a Subaru sedan on the New England Highway, about 4.30pm, 6km north of Uralla.
The 68-year-old died at the scene, while his male passenger was transported to hospital with suspected fractures and internal injuries, and remained there yesterday.
An 83-year-old man who was driving the Subaru suffered a soft-tissue injury as a result of the crash and was taken by ambulance to Armidale hospital in a stable condition.
An 82-year-old woman in the same vehicle suffered suspected fractures and internal injuries and was also transported to hospital for treatment.
Police said preliminary investigations had revealed the cars were travelling in opposite directions at the time of the crash.
Crash investigators from Tamworth spent several hours at the scene with New England detectives as they tried to piece together what caused the head-on collision.
Investigators have spoken to several witnesses from the scene, and yesterday tributes were posted online for Mr Morris as family and friends tried to come to grips with the shock loss.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
