London: It is just as well the Wallabies have grown to think of Twickenham as a home away from home.

There is every chance a repeat of last week and the week before and the week before that will come to pass at the iconic home of English rugby on Saturday – that the lion's share of the 80,000-odd fans who turn up for the World Cup final will find some reason to support the other blokes.

First it was Wales and Scotland, understandable given England's early exit from the tournament. But then it was Argentina, not quite bosom buddies with the Poms after a long history of political and sporting animosity.

And despite Australia's underdog status heading into the final, it now looks set to be New Zealand, as English spectators embrace, well, anyone but the Wallabies.

"Maybe Argentina got a bit more of that because they were probably more of the underdogs in that game, people were liking their story too," coach Michael Cheika said.

"We've been over there [Argentina] and played over there so you get used to it. And how you play generally decides how much they're involved. So when we went off our game a little bit and we let them into the game that let the crowd get involved. They weren't as involved when we were in charge of the game early on.

"The crowd has got more gold as we've gone along but we've pretty much been the away team the whole way through but our supporters at the ground have been unbelievable. The players have really remarked on it and I'm sure they'll be there in numbers on Saturday and they'll enjoy the ride."

Early indications suggest so. Flight aggregator Cheapflights.com.au reported a spike in searches for flights to London at half-time and full-time during the Wallabies' semi-final clash with Argentina.

Data collected by the company showed an 18 per cent surge in airfare searches from Australia to London and a 12 per cent increase in queries about airfares from New Zealand.

With the Australian dollar flagging badly against the pound, trips across are not cheap affairs. Patches of gold in the stadium appear to be dominated by older, well-heeled tour group members, with the obligatory resident ex-pats represented as well.

Cheika said he and the team were overwhelmed by the support from the general public in Australia.

"Well, obviously, we're not home so we feel it through all the messages we get and what we see," he said.

"I think in any sport, when Australia plays, you want to be behind it, whether it's league or soccer, even AFL when they play compromise games – I've been to a couple of those games – that's a really good feeling.

"For me it's been a really good journey about national pride as well. I think I've learnt a lot about national pride from the time I've spent with the team in this environment. I've really enjoyed it.

"We had the Socceroos captain in our dressing room after the game and he was loving it, enjoying that atmosphere and that's what we want to do. We want people to enjoy themselves."

Prince Harry was at Twickenham on Sunday but failed to be moved by the Wallabies' cause. He was instead pictured looking bemused as the Commonwealth nation put on a four-try masterclass to advance to their fourth final in the 22-year history of the tournament.

The Wallabies will again occupy the away team dressing room at the stadium after losing a coin toss on Monday.

But after four wins on the trot there no one is complaining.

"I enjoy it, personally," second-row Rob Simmons said. "You're familiar with it. It's something where you know what you're going to get and to be familiar with a place, it's just like being at home really.

"When you make your home your home, you're familiar with it and that's what you enjoy about it."
