A FIRE lit near Moree's skate park at the weekend has destroyed the town's Aboriginal tent embassy.
Police had reported that the fire destroyed a structure near the park in Balo St, but it was revealed yesterday that the Gomeroi embassy campsite off Endeavour Lane went up in flames.
Moree Fire and Rescue officers attended the blaze near the Mehi River on Saturday night and extinguished the fire within 15 minutes, but the tent was unable to be salvaged.
The campsite had been set up in April to draw attention to indigenous issues in the region.
Barwon police have launched an investigation into the matter after witnesses described the possible offender as a young Aboriginal boy, wearing a yellow shirt and blue baseball cap.
