PLANS IN PLACE: New England region locals have a chance to help create a giant tree frog, in the literal sense, at the Kentucky National Treefest celebrations this Friday.
NATIONAL Treefest will celebrate a milestone in Kentucky on Friday, its 20th birthday.
This year, to mark the 20th anniversary of the event, the festival will celebrate the theme “Children of Treefest 2012” and will be held in conjunction with Frog Dreaming at “The Hill” in Kentucky.
The original Treefest attracted about 6000 people who came to see 90 exhibitors and 20 speakers on all topics covering trees and critical efforts to address die-back.
During that first day 3000 trees, made up of 200 different species, were planted.
Organisers of this Friday’s event said the 2012 celebration offered an opportunity for those interested to revisit the original site 20 years on.
Another highlight will be the planting of about 3000 trees in the shape of a giant tree frog that, when complete, will be able to be seen from the air and in particular the Qantas Armidale-Sydney flight path.
Organiser Katherine Taylor said during the day Landcare groups and other teams would contest the Landcare Olympics.
“The winning team will be awarded for their efforts with a $2000 grant for on-ground Landcare works,” she said.
Kentucky P and C will be providing lunch and there will be a variety of speakers and stalls offering information on important Landcare topics.
The original amazing maze will also be reassembled for the last time, featuring many local artists’ canvasses, including a piece by well-known artist Angus Nivison.
