Bet it’s not as whacky as the old family VW sitting in wait for visitors to the Manilla home of Bobby and Meryn Wales .
Meryn and Bobby are both NSW paramedics working out of Tamworth. But when she isn’t helping saving lives throughout the area, Meryn delves in her two passions – gardening and kart racing.
“I love a quirky garden, not the conventional stuff. And I love my go-karting too,” she said.
“When a friend took the engine out of his little VW for a shooting buggy, I asked if I could have the rest of the car for my garden.”
That was three years ago, and after removing its top, manoeuvring it around her front garden with a tractor and filling it with soil via a front-end loader, the end result was the little mustard coloured feature in the Wales’ garden.
“I call it My Herbie (from the movie) Garden. I’ve got chillis and other herbs dotted around in it.”
Other quirky additions to her “fairy garden”, which she designed with kids in mind, are beds made from kart tyres, tree stumps with holes drilled for the fairies, big rocks for the cats to climb over – you name it, it’s probably there.
Meryn’s other love – the kart racing, will see her and hubby Bobby travel to Grenfell this weekend for the Southern Star Kart Series.
“I love it. In the year that I’ve been doing it now, I’ve got about eight trophies in the cabinet,” she said.
“I’m the karter, and Bobby is my pit crew. While I’m in the garden at home, he’s always tinkering around in the shed with his cars.”
