Police from the Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit are examining the circumstances surrounding the two vehicle collision on the New England Highway , about a kilometre north of Bendemeer.
A tangled mess is all that remained of the Mitsubishi Triton after it collided with a yellow sedan about 2.15pm and left the road, hit a tree, snapping the trunk in half.
One of the occupants was trapped after the door was crushed, but was rescued by ambulance paramedics who treated both the driver and passenger.
The impact of the crash flipped the yellow sedan, which came to rest on its roof but the female driver was able to get out.
A spokesperson for Ambulance NSW confirmed three patients were assessed at the scene, but only two were transported to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition.
The driver of the sedan was not injured and was taken by police to Tamworth hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
The crash closed the highway for several hours as investigators examined the scene, with motorists forced to take diversions around the Oxley Highway and Walcha Rd.
The RFS was called to monitor a fuel spill before both cars were towed.
