ENTERING the Guinness World Book of Records would put Gunnedah on the international map but, more important than breaking a record, it would be breaking the chain of domestic violence in regional communities.

Gunnedah has taken a stand: domestic violence will not be tolerated.
And the town is keen to not only send out that message but also set a new world record in doing so.
On November 8, an estimated 3000 people will gather at Donnelly Field to form a massive umbrella mosaic in the shape of a white ribbon. If successful, it will break the record of 2480 people, held by Orlando, Florida.
Organiser Deb Hilton said plans were moving along nicely, with the 3000 umbrellas due to arrive in Sydney from China on Thursday.
They’re also on the lookout for 60 marshals who would be responsible for placing those with the umbrellas into the white ribbon formation.
“The current record is 2480 umbrellas held up for the required 30 seconds while the event is aerial photographed. We only need 2481 to better it, but with 2500, we’d be done and dusted,” Ms Hilton said.
Organisers are confident people will get behind the effort.
“Gunnedah Shire and its surrounds is only small, but the people all have big hearts and I think the community will all rally and get on board,” Ms Hilton said.
“The fact that more and more women and families are experiencing domestic violence makes it important to keep the momentum of awareness campaigns going.”
Participants must register by taking their forms with them on the day, at a cost of $2.
