The election is on Saturday, October 31, and will decide who will represent Indigenous members of the community in nine regions across the state for a period of four years.
NSWALC chief executive officer Lesley Turner said this year’s election was critical for the future of the land rights network.
“Councillors set the strategic direction of NSWALC and make decisions on a range of important issues affecting Aboriginal people in NSW,” she said.
“Voting gives local Aboriginal Land Council members a say in how decisions about land, housing, culture and economic development benefit local communities.”
Mr Turner said in the past 32 years, land council members had worked hard to build the best land rights system in Australia.
But we couldn’t take that for granted.
“Only a big turnout on October 31 will ensure that land rights stay strong and continue to deliver for future generations,” he said.
Nominations for candidates interested in contesting the election closed at noon yesterday.

Mr Turner said prior to the end of October, it was important for people to check with their local land council office to see whether they were eligible to vote.
Voters who are unable to attend on polling day can lodge a postal vote and can apply online at www.elections.nsw.gov.au/alcelection/voting/postalvoting
Applications must be received by Friday, October 23.
