Stories of the most hostile away game in recent years came flooding to the minds of the first team members to arrive in Amman when the alarming sight of the military and the amoured vehicle greeted them at their hotel on Sunday.

It was the sight that shocked midfielder Aaron Mooy, who - despite being told of Jordan's passionate soccer fans - never expected heavily armed soldiers and an amoured personnel vehicle to patrol the Socceroos' team hotel.

Upon the sight of the ramped-up security at their team hotel, Mooy immediately understood why Australian staff members and players have long spoken of the intimidation of playing in Jordan following their famous 2-1 loss in a World Cup qualifier in September 2012.

Despite a running track separating the field from the stands at the 25,000-capacity Amman International Stadium, the passion of the nearly all-male Jordanian crowd rattled some of the Socceroos, many of whom have played across Europe and Asia.

"A lot of the boys have been saying that last time they played here the crowd was unbelievable, crazy. It's exciting knowing that fans are going to be there in numbers. It's a big game there, probably the strongest other team in our group so it's going to be a great game," Mooy said. "Even some of the staff were saying it was very hostile."​

Hotel security is tight throughout Jordan where all cars are routinely screened before entering driveways and all guests must pass security before entering premises. It is not known whether the heavy presence of the military was there solely for the Socceroos or other high profile guests. While some were initially startled by the sight of the vehicle and troops, the players praised the warm hospitality of the locals upon their arrival.

The 25-year-old Mooy joked the amoured vehicle outside the hotel doors made him feel "protected" but says the expected atmosphere at the Amman International Stadium isn't likely to distract his game.

"Once I start playing, I block everything out but the ball. The first couple of minutes you can hear the crowd but after you start breathing a little bit, I don't hear them too much," Mooy said.

Mooy has played away to Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox and in both the Sydney and Melbourne A-League derbies but has been warned there is a different element when it comes to playing in Amman.

"[The players] just said they were pretty crazy, screaming, making you feel uncomfortable but I'm sure if you just focus on the game you can block the crowd out," Mooy said.

As a set-piece taker, Mooy is accustomed to entering into close quarters with rival fans, especially when taking corners where the insults become the most audible. However, he hopes the language barrier means verbal lashes won't break his thick skin.

"Because I take corners, people will usually say things to me [such as] 'Where's your hair gone?' At least with these guys I won't understand them. The corners are the worst, because that's when you hear everything but it won't do much, it doesn't affect me," Mooy said.

The Socceroos are due to play a World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh in November, which is at risk of being cancelled after Football Federation Australia raised safety concerns with FIFA and federal government agencies last week.

The concerns come as Islamic State has vowed to attack more foreigners in Bangladesh after the assassination of a Japanese man only two days after Cricket Australia postponed Australia's tour of the south Asian country.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs said it had obtained "reliable information to suggest that militants may be planning to target Australian and Western interests in Bangladesh".
