Matava Jewel could go further after Tamworth romp

CONNECTIONS of Matava Jewel are looking for some longer races for the bitch after she romped home at Tamworth on Saturday.

She won her second race and her second at the track in the New England Mutual Mixed Grade (457m) after kicking clear in the straight.

The bitch is trained at Westdale by Mark and Simone Taylor.

“It was great,” Mark Taylor said.

“She’s searching for the distance.

“There’s just not a lot around for her but she’s likes Tamworth – won her maiden here.

“She ran over 300 last time but she was running well at the end.

“But she’s only a pup and she’s still learning.”

The squeeze box didn’t worry the bitch either.

She jumped well and moved away from them coming out of the turn.

“She likes it from the middle outwards,” Taylor said.

“She doesn’t like getting crowded.

“But it’s hard to tell because she’s only had a few starts.”

Matava Jewel is also locally owned.

Anthony Mabbot is one of the owners and said he expects her to improve, especially if she can find more races around the 500m mark.

“We got her as a pup,” Mabbott said.

“That’s two wins now.

“She just wants to go over the distance.

“She’s only a pup so she’ll get better.”

She won it by two and a quarter lengths from Mr Mako (Robert Ryan), with Toots Victory (Mark Munn) a further half length back in third.

The 10 races at Tamworth saw 10 different trainers notch a win.

Brojo’s Mojo won again for John Summers and this time by more than 10 lengths while Hayden Munn’s Peekabook Sharky also went back to back after success at Armidale a week earlier.
