An eyewitness told Fairfax Media that a silver sedan hit one of the petrol bowsers after turning into the forecourt of the Caltex Service Station, on the corner of Marsh and Barney streets about 1.45pm.
The bowser and car caught fire on impact, with the flames licking the forecourt’s awning, the witness said.
Two bowsers were destroyed.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were on the scene within minutes of the accident happening.
Both occupants of the vehicles escaped without burns and were taken to Armidale hospital.
Police said it appeared the driver lost control of the vehicle before hitting the bowser.
Barney St was closed to allow emergency services access to the scene, with police and firefighters remaining on the scene to secure the site.
The street reopened at about 2.30pm.
