Ben Venue shared the spoils with Bletchington Public School after playing out a scoreless draw in the final.
It followed an epic semi-final battle against Harrington Park, with Ben Venue finally breaking the 0-all stalemate into the fifth period of drop-off extra-time.
In the first 10-minute period of those they were down to seven. The next four (also 10 minutes) they played five, with goalscorer Jamelia Kelly, keeper Evelyn Ward, Lara Moloney, Emily Ray and Brielle Ball left on the field.
The final was just as tight, with Ben Venue defending three short corners on the half-time whistle to keep the score at 0-all.
The Tamworth boys did it a little easier, disposing of Illawong 8-nil in their semi-final before beating Taree 3-1 in the final.
“We dominated the game. I would have been disappointed had we not won it,” Tamworth Public coach Graeme McKenzie said.
They led 2-nil at half-time courtesy of goals to Ryan and Chris Taggart.
Taree scored first in the second half to make it 2-1 and “had the run of play” for a little while but they couldn’t make further inroads, Ryan Taggart then popping in his second to seal the silverware for Tamworth Public.
“We played really well,” McKenzie said.
“We were almost mistake-free, which was great.”
He had a couple of Year 3 boys and said they were outstanding, with Sam Bartlett-Taylor and Charlie Stone both doing some really smart things.
Benji Stacey, Lachlan Spark and Jack Dadd, who was backing up from the basketball finals the day before, also had particularly strong games, along with the two Taggarts, while Lachlan Perry and Kurt Barton were strong at the back.
Josh Morris also did some good things in goal.
“The goal Taree scored was in the top corner,” McKenzie said, and well beyond his reach.
It was their only defensive blemish for the finals.
“They played well both games – played a nice team game,” he said.
The semi was a bit of a contest early, he said, but once they got those first couple of goals they started to relax and dominate.
