The weekend program will incorporate the NSW 50 target single barrel night and NSW 40 target mixed target championship titles.
The mixed championship will be held this morning and, as Tamworth Clay Target Club treasurer Chris Durkin explained, involves the competitors shooting 10 double barrels, 10 single barrels, a 10-shot pointscore, and a five pair double rise.
As the name suggests, the night title will be contested under lights tonight.
Durkin knows of shooters coming from as far away as Cobar, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour but, with no cut-off for entries, he said it was hard to know how many they will get.
“We’re hoping for in excess of 200 shooters,” he said.
The predicted conditions for the weekend should make for some good shooting.
The club itself boasts over 100 members and will have around 30 competing on the weekend.
Farrer teachers Greg Wade and Wes Ledham will also be taking some of their students out to compete for what will be a challenging shoot but one they are looking forward to.
Durkin expects a few of the host club’s shooters to be in the title reckoning.
“We’ve got some pretty top shooters,” he said, mentioning the likes of John Sleightholme, Geoff Hunter and Stewart Bowden.
The event will cater for all capabilities and ages, with individual high guns for veterans, ladies and juniors along with the regular grades.
Shooting gets underway today at 9am.
