The State Combined High Schools Championships began in Sydney yesterday and finish tomorrow.
The Polding (Northern NSW Catholic Schools) titles will be held in Newcastle today, while the Combined Catholic Colleges (Secondary) Championships follow next Friday.
The focus will then shift to the State PSSA Championships.
They’ll be held in Sydney on October 14 and 15.
Upwards of 20 of Warner’s training group will be competing at the various championships.
They’ll compete across a range of distances from 100m right up to 1500m.
He even has one girl who comes over from Wee Waa every second week to train.
Warner’s mantra is simple – “do your best”.
One who has been is Tamworth Public’s Adam Williams.
He is just back from competing at the National All Schools Cross-Country in Melbourne where he ran 12th in the 10yrs boys’ event and helped the NSW team win gold in the teams event.
They then won silver in the 1000m relay.
Williams was joined by fellow North West representative and future superstar Lacey Quigley.
For the second year straight, Quigley blitzed the field at the Moonee Valley course to take the gold medal and be crowned Australian champion.
Just like last year as well, Quigley ran second in the zone before going on to be a national winner.
Quigley and Williams both gain automatic qualification to the PSSA State Athletic Championships, despite missing the carnival for cross country duties, after running very impressive times all season.
The North West CHS team got off to a good start at the CHS Championships in Sydney yesterday, with Oxley High’s Jessica Aldridge claiming the side’s first gold in the 16 years javelin.
Aldridge threw 42.23m to take the title before going on to place fourth in the discus.
Fellow Oxley student Corin Webster jumped 1.89m to place second in the 16 years high jump, just pipping Coonabarabran’s Harley Wood on a countback after both jumped the same height.
Coach Greg Allen said the team performed quite well, with several athletes qualifying for finals that will be run over the next two days.
