Sydney-based developer Construx Group lodged an application for the motel on the corner of Merton and Brent streets, but Narrabri Shire Council refused it in May, despite a recommendation for approval by council’s planning department.
The developer, which maintains the motel will meet the growing demand for mining accommodation in the area, then took the matter to the Land and Environment Court, with commissioner Annelise Tuor inspecting the site on Friday.
Representatives for the developer and council were both present, along with angry residents who argue putting it in the main street will block other future development opportunities.
Boggabri resident Julie Heiler said back in July there was more than enough accommodation in town already – some of it vacant – and the priority should be on encouraging families to the town to live in order to secure the community’s long-term future.
