Open five days a week, it’s a place where mums can sit and breastfeed their baby in peace, while older siblings play with the toys, kept occupied by co-ordinator Tania Brennan or any of the trained staff.
It’s a place where, once a month, guest speakers introduce a range of topics, including speech therapy, audiometry, birth doolas, emergency services, women’s health, essential oils, dietary needs, telecommunication matters and preparing wills.
At the next one, a Salvation Army financial adviser will address the topic of budgeting and how to take care of your money.
“Once a month, on a Tuesday, we have Bubz Biz, where the child and family health nurse comes here from the local hospital,” Mrs Brennan said.
“She can weigh and measure your baby, and we try to arrange a guest speaker on that morning to talk about something of importance to young families, either now or at some stage in the future.”
They also host a mothers’ circle, a round-table chat about any topic of interest, sing-song, with nursery rhymes and lullabies, craft mornings utilising recycled items or things readily found around the home, musical mornings and story sessions, among others.
“It’s so much more than just a toy library,” Mrs Brennan said.
“Sometimes a mum just needs to have a bit of adult conversation. Everybody’s in the same situation here, so it’s a great place for new mums to come and meet other families and to make a new circle of friends.
“We provide a good support network and a lot of resources that can be utilised by our members.
“All our staff have training in parenting programs and how to manage the children.”
Mrs Brennan said the toy library had a link on the www.bingara.com.au website, as well as its own Facebook page, where weekly events were promoted.
