In Gunnedah, the Tamworth Roos once again had their eye in, Dan Overeem slotting four goals as the major semi-finalists beat the Bulldogs by 96 points.
The Inverell Saints did even better, slotting 25 maximums at home to score 169 against the battling Tamworth Swans 37.
Chris Whitton was one of the Saints’ best, kicking six goals and working hard at forward.
Next week the Saints will meet the Narrabri Eagles to decide who will host the following week’s semi-final, as the two clubs prepare to play each other two weeks in a row.
The Eagles warmed up with a decent 18.7.115 to 10.11.71 win over the Moree Suns, although didn’t have it all their own way.
Eagles captain coach Todd Dunn said that parts of the game were very tightly contested, although the Eagles had their eye in once again to kick 18 with only seven behinds.
“We were up by only four points at the first break but then pulled away to a five-goal lead at halftime which then went back to 17 points before we ran away at the end,” Dunn said.
“Their captain (Nick Sullivan) copped a pretty bad dislocated knee which put a bit of a damper on the day.
“It wasn’t what you wanted to see,” he said.
Dunn believes the Suns will be a force to be reckoned with in a few years, such is their stock of young stars.
“It is good for the team and the comp to get young blokes like that playing.”
Giant ruckmen Andrew Weymar was one of the best on field and dominated his younger opposition, winning plenty of ball and servicing his forwards.
“He was putting it in our lap up front,” Dunn said. “He is just huge.”
Bailey Clark at centre half back and Kieran McCann on the wing also rated a mention from the skipper.
“We were dominant as a group today and want to keep that going into next week,” Dunn said.
“Whoever wins the midfield will win those games.”
