He died alone, a young man in a Sydney hospital bed thousands of kilometres from home, a victim of exploitation, poverty and a disease belonging in the pages of a 19th century medical text — tuberculosis. When a doctor phoned the man's family in India to say that he wouldn't survive the day, his father dropped the phone and the connection was lost.
