Race five on the eight-race meeting saw jockey Greg Ryan steer the sometimes stubborn mare out of barrier three to a comfortable position just off the pace.
Rounding the top of the straight, the Tim McIntosh- trained chestnut mare made her move, romping home unchallenged to win by over five lengths from the Alan-Kehoe-trained Zero Options, with the same gap again to Michael Clements’ Rose of Indy.
Ryan was pleased the horse had broke her maiden with a good run but said she still had a lot of work to do.
“She has really been struggling to break through,” Ryan said. “She has a few head issues – to be honest, she is dirty on the world.
“You try to make her do something and she will do the opposite just to spite you,” he said.
“Hopefully this win will sort her out a bit.”
Ryan’s luck improved as the day went, claiming a fifth in the first, then a third and a second before taking out the maiden with his fourth start.
“It was a good run home for a maiden but, to be honest, there wasn’t that much chasing me today,” he said.
The following race was the Class 3 Carlton Mid Handicap over 1400m.
The William and Stafford Wain-trained San Sabarto carried the top weight of 59kg to win by just under a length to local trainer Sue Grills’ Market Guru, with Robert Thompson on board Handled three and a half lengths back in third.
The Armidale-trained favourite, San Sabarto was coming off two wins and a second at her past three starts, making this a fifth win in 18 starts.
