NEW England MP Barnaby Joyce says the Coalition’s commitment to cut toxic emissions by up to 28 per cent by 2030 is “responsible and achievable”. The Abbott government this week promised the 26 to 28 per cent reduction based on 2005 greenhouse gas emission levels in the next 15 years.

Climate Institute chief executive John Connor slammed the target as a “big fail”, saying it will still leave Australia with the “highest per capita pollution figures in 2030”.
But Mr Joyce said the target built on “Australia’s excellent record” on climate change through the Coalition’s Direct Action plan.
“It is comparable to the targets of other developed countries and allows our economy and jobs to grow strongly,” he said. “Australia is making a strong and credible contribution to the international effort to tackle climate change, and our emissions intensity and emissions per person will fall further than other developed economies.”
