The Thunderbolts 18s produced a final-quarter surge to overhaul the Gosford City Rebels and claim the Division 1 spoils 54-51, while the Quirindi 18s boys overcame a late stutter to beat Grafton 72-70 in their Division 2 final and the girls toughed it out with only three players for the final minutes to defeat Taree 69-68 and make it a northern double in the 18s girls.
It was a huge effort, Quirindi Basketball president Terry Beresford said, after encountering foul trouble.
“We ended up with three players left on the court for nearly the last three minutes,” he said.
Hanna Davis was the hero for them, nailing a two-pointer with a couple of seconds left on the clock to put them one ahead.
At the same time, the Thunderbolt women were turning an eight-point deficit at the final break into a three- point win.
“The last time an U18 side women’s team from Tamworth won a final was in 2009,” a very proud coach Robyn Skelton said.
The Thunderbolts 16s boys also made it through to the final as did the Quirindi 16s girls and 16s boys.
