At last night’s council meeting, councillors rejected a recommendation to move from Level 2 back to Level 1 in Tamworth in line with the trigger points in the current drought management plan.
Instead, councillors supported a new recommendation to stay at Level 2, at least until September, when a new report will come back to council.
The recommendation received unanimous support.
Deputy mayor Russell Webb reflected the feelings expressed by all councillors that the community supported retaining the current restrictions, to ensure adequate supply into the future.
In moving the recommendation, councillor Helen Tickle said it was appropriate, given the prediction of a new El Niño event in the next six to 12 months and the community’s representations to council.
Under council’s drought management plan, which is under review, when Chaffey Dam climbs to 45 per cent, restrictions should be eased to Level 1.
At the start of this week the water storage had topped 50 per cent.
