Answer that call and it could evolve into being the best night of fun you’ve enjoyed in years – legally.
At the end of November each year the Over 50s seniors of Barraba stage a one-night variety concert in the town – proving not only to themselves, but to the locals also that they’ve still got what it takes.
Perhaps you think you don’t quite have the gusto to get up and carry on in front of an audience. Well local seniors, headed by Beth Brodbeck, are saying: “Give it a go. You’ve got nothing to lose and plenty to gain in that you’ll meet a great bunch of people and give the local community an evening of fun”.
“We first started holding these annual concerts about 20 years ago. We only do it one night a year, but it’s a great heap of fun,” Mrs Brodbeck said.
“We get up on the stage and sing, dance, or do skits. The audience love it and we love doing it.
“Over the years we’ve had people in their 50s, 60s and even 70s performing, but naturally, those numbers are dwindling. So we’d really like as many people as we can muster to turn up at our first meeting (from 7pm on Saturday, August 8 at the Seniors Lodge in Fitzroy St).
“Anyone thinking they’re not up to performing in front of an audience, then there are plenty of jobs backstage, like costumes, lighting and sound.
“We’re really putting in the call for big numbers to take an interest. It’s a load of fun with a great bunch of people.”
The invitation is extended to those who perhaps sing in the bath, jig around the house to the radio while they think no-one’s around, or even grab the hairbrush and fancy themselves as a Madonna in front of the mirror.
“No matter what their age, they’re never too old. And the battier they are the better. There’s nothing to it – just do it once and they’ll be hooked.”
