Rivals Tamworth FC and North Companions FC joined forces to host the inaugural Dan Haslam Memorial Trophy game at Johnson Field on Saturday.
Money raised from the match and subsequent gala dinner at the Family Hotel will help young Tamworth residents stricken with cancer.
Mr Haslam lost his long battle with bowel cancer in February, but not before becoming the figurehead of a campaign to legalise medical marijuana.
Through Mr Haslam’s campaign, which the extended Haslam family continues, the NSW government is close to legalising the drug for medical purposes.
Event organiser Kurt Barrow said Mr Haslam had played for North Companions FC as a junior before lacing up the boots for Tamworth FC when he was older.
He said the annual match would ensure Mr Haslam’s courage to push for change while under enormous physical duress himself was never forgotten.
Mr Haslam’s wife, Alyce, father Lou, brother Billy and grandmother Pat were in attendance to present the trophy to North Companions FC, which won the game 4-1.
