THERE was barely a dry eye in the room when Kate McDonald walked on stage to thank the Tamworth community for their support over the past six months.

In January, a freak trampoline accident tragically rendered the popular former Tamworth High School student and accomplished sportswoman a quadriplegic.
Paralysed from the shoulders down, medical experts feared there was little chance the 28-year-old would ever regain the use of her arms or legs.
But on Saturday night Ms McDonald defied that grim prognosis and walked, with the assistance of a cane, on stage at West Tamworth League Club.
The remarkable achievement was greeted with a standing ovation from the 600 people gathered at the venue to help raise money for her ongoing medical bills.
Friends of Kate organising committee member Mick Galvin, who taught Ms McDonald for six years, said she was an inspirational woman.
“When I first spoke to Kate (after the accident), she had only a tiny bit of feeling in one wrist,” he said.
“So to see her walk with a cane up onto that stage and address the audience, it really was an emotional occasion.
“There was absolute silence when she spoke. She was obviously emotional herself and overwhelmed by the support she had received.”
Through various fundraising activities the Friends of Kate group has raised tens of thousands of dollars towards Ms McDonald’s treatment.
“She hasn’t plateaued yet – she’s still making improvements – and most of the money will go towards improving her physical wellbeing,” Mr Galvin said.
“She’s got expensive rehabilitation programs she can undertake back in Sydney and also needs a new, modified motor vehicle to meet her needs.”
Mr Galvin, who thanked Wendy Foster, Ben Hazel and The Principals for providing the entertainment, said the fundraiser’s final figure would be known in the coming days.
