The Bob Milligan-trained four-year-old mare led all the way to win yesterday’s Jascab Winter Sprinter (1000m) at Tamworth, fighting off her eight opponents to snare a length and a half win from Tamworth-trained Jefferson Park (Craig Martin), with Jane Clement’s White Stocking two and a half lengths away third.
Milligan prepares Ms Wicked Wanda at Taree and has now won eight races with her from her 25 starts.
“We bought her as a yearling,” Glenn Milligan, son of the trainer, said yesterday.
He was the truck driver, strapper and trainer for the day.
“She might be little but she’s good. She burnt them off.”
Martin said his five-year-old runner-up, who has won nine of 31 starts, continued his bad luck at his home track.
The son of Dream Ballad has yet to win in four starts on his home track, running two seconds and two thirds.
“He ran a nice race,” Martin said.
“He went super considering the state of the track.
“He’ll go to Brisbane now for a couple of runs and look for a better track.”
Elegies ran his opponents ragged and earned himself a “run in town” when the Texas mare won yesterday’s Advanced Inland Security Benchmark 55 Handicap (2100m) at Tamworth.
The Rod Hilton-trained mare won her third race in four starts when Glenn Lynch pinched the race early on by taking the lead from a slow pace and outstaying his rivals.
“They were walking,” Lynch explained to Hilton on unsaddling.
“You did the right thing,” Hilton replied.
“He’s a dead-set sticker.”
Elegies was coming off a good win at Gunnedah over 2050m.
“That win (yesterday) was easier than the last but in a better field,” Hilton said.
“I might take him to town (Brisbane) on that.
“He’s done well for us.
“He’s a very handy horse.
“He might win a better race somewhere.”
Hilton then snared a second win when Casino Express found the inside express lane to dive through and win the Trusting @ Turangga Farm Benchmark 60 Handicap (1200m).
The final race of the HNWRA season was won by Port Macquarie trainer Tas Morton when his four-year-old gelding Star Of Legs – owned, bred and raced by Walcha’s Helen and Peter Wauch – held off Stafford Wain’s San Sabarto to win the Sean Hofman Electrical Class 3 Handicap (1400m).
