HUNDREDS of people have been lending a hand for an adventure playground in Tamworth this week – and they’re having as much fun as big kids can have when they’re let loose to build some toys.

The giant volunteer effort to build the playground at Endeavour Park began on Tuesday, with three shifts each day over a 12-hour roster.
It will continue until late Sunday. Chief playground organiser Charles Impey expects the massive manual effort will see the target reached during the six-day build.
“We think we will have completed the main structures by then. After that, we will have the paths, signage and the rubber surfacing to do to finish it all off,” Mr Impey said yesterday.
“We have done balustrades, and the decks are in place today, and on Friday we will start attaching the slides, monkey bars and balance bars.”
Construction volunteers have turned out in their hundreds, including retired builders and chippies, and even plenty of people who can’t even wield a hammer without hitting their fingers – but they’ve all been welcomed with open arms, and handed something practical to do.
“There’s something for everyone to do. We’ve had plenty using router bits and drop saws, because every bit of the timber being used has had to be routed, because little kids will be playing on it,” he said.
“We’ve had a great effort so far. Yesterday we had 53 TAFE students turn up, and another 50 or so today, and they’ve been outstanding.”
Mr Impey hopes the final touches for the 1400-square-metre playground, in the grounds of the Marsupial Park at the top of Endeavour Dr, can be put in place by the last week of August or the first week of September – and the little kids let loose in the playground from then.
