The Bathurst gelding, trained by former Tamworth trainer Peter Bullock, was perfectly driven by Narrabri’s Chris Shepherdson, leading all the way and carving out a 9.25m win from The Muse with Isobel Maree 3.25way third.
Signory Shannon’s winning time of 4mins.8secs and rate of 2:04.6 was also a new track record, bettering Kotare Sterling’s 1989 mark of 4mins 1.18secs and 2:04.90 mile rate.
“It was a massive run here last week,” Shepherdson told on-course interviewer Mark Lowe when second to The Muse, who was boxed away most of last night’s final and never got out until well into the short Tamworth straight.
“He went super tonight – just bowled along in front.”
Bullock was delighted.
“We were pretty confident,” he said.
“When he gets to the front he takes on another dimension,” he told Lowe.
“He was in a pretty good position.”
Bullock said the seven-year-old gelding son of Bettors Delight thrives on hard work.
After running second to The Muse in one of two Marathon heats at Tamworth on July 16 he took him to Young for a 2100m C2/C3 race on July 22.
“He ran against some pretty smart horses,” Bullock said.
“And ran a good third down there too.
“He just enjoys his work and if I could find a race for him somewhere in three days’ time he’d probably go better again there.”
Last night’s Tamworth race was the final race of the season and the club’s last until November 5.
The club’s awards night will be held at the Southgate Inn on Saturday, August 15.
Tickets are $35 a head and available from the Tamworth Harness Racing Club office.
