The Roosters, after a big Ronald McDonald House charity day, have a sponsors’ day ready to hopefully celebrate a victory that would cement their minor premiership and a home major semi-final on Saturday, August 29.
The Roosters have games against Quirindi and Uralla to finish their home and away season after tomorrow’s Dungowan clash.
The Walcha Roos handed the Roosters a giant scare last week, scoring in the first 20 seconds and then equalising in the first minute after half-time of a clash the Roosters eventually won 48-18.
“We didn’t have a good start,” Rooster captain-coach Nathan Hamlin admitted after the game.
“We had to regroup and show a bit of urgency.
“We’d started so well down at the Creek (the previous week) too so I don’t really know what happened.
“But we stuck to the game plan and executed pretty well after that.
“Sharpie controlled the ball well too,” he said of young five-eighth and playmaker Jackson Sharpe.
He’s hoping for further improvement from the Roosters, especially in the bombing department, after his backs looked pretty ordinary under the high ball.
Tomorrow’s game pits Kootingal (28pts) against second-placed Dungowan (24pts) and, while it looks improbable the Cowboys can snag the minor premiership off the Roosters, they will be keen to make a statement.
It also pits some outstanding tryscorers gainst each other .
Dungowan’s Zander Smith (17) is the leading tryscorer in the Group 4 Second Division with teammates Dylan O’Brien (16), Clint Ridley (15), Brock Morgan (12) and Mitch Brown (11) also in double digits while Kootingal centre Ryan Martin (13) leads his side’s tryscoring as well as the G4 Second Division pointscorers with 218 points from his 13 tries and 83 goals.
Centre Jerome York (12) and lock Andrew Moodie (10) have also crossed a number of times while Cowboy centre Brock Morgan sits fourth on the pointscoring table with 158 points from his dozen tries and 55 goals.
Boggabri’s Jayde Campbell is second with 16 tries and 58 goals (180pts) and Bendemeer’s Chris Leslie third with six tries and 69 goals (162pts).
Leslie and his fellow Mountain Men go to Barraba tomorrow to tackle the Bulldogs, while Campbell and the Boggabri Kangaroos head up to Walcha to tackle their namesake Walcha Roos in a game which could pitchfork them further up the table.
Uralla and Quirindi also clash at Woodville Oval while Werris Creek has a big “Chopper” day at David Taylor Park against Manilla.
The Magpies will play in special jumpers designed to honour their support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, their normal black and white interwoven with the yellow chopper colours and logo.
The jumpers will be auctioned off or bought after the game in the post-match function at the Commercial Hotel.
A promotional picture of Werris Creek players Beau Parry and Cody Tickle modelling the special Magpie Chopper jumpers was captioned wrongly yesterday. The two Magpie players were Parry and Tickle, not Parry and Peter Johnson as printed. Apologies for the mistake.
