CHAFFEY’S Black Belt Academy students returned with a haul of trophies from the recent 2015 NSW Koshiki Contact Karate Country Championships at Inverell’s Holy Trinity.

The Tamworth martial arts centre had 16 members compete for five first placings, five second placings and six thirds.
Jane Cohen, Edmund Bourke, Riley Leys and Samarah Thrift all picked up multiple placings, with Cohen winning the senior female Kata 5th Kyu and under and finishing third in the veterans female Kumite all grades, Bourke topping the 14/15 years Kumite all grades and placing third in his mixed Kata 4th Kya and above, and Leys crowned champion in the 10/11 years mixed Kata 5th Kyu and under and placing second in the 10/11 years female Kumite all grades.
Thrift, meanwhile, was third in both the 16/17 years female Kumite all grades and mixed Kata 4th Kyu and above.
Kristie Chaffey won the open black belt female Kata and Scott Cohen the veterans male Kumite all grades.
Melissa Laupepa (veterans female Kumite all grades), Luke Leys (8/9 years mixed Kata 5th Kyu and under), Amelia Cohen (7 years and under mixed Kata all grades) and Macklin George all picked up seconds with George making it a Chaffeys quinella in the 10/11 years mixed Kata 5th Kyu and under.
Evie Bower also earned a trophy for the third in the 10/11 years female Kumite all grades, and Dave Cronin the 63.5-73kg senior male under 2nd Kyu.
