The versatile Blues skipper received the three points in The Northern Daily Leader Group 4 Player of the Year Award despite being in a losing side after Gunnedah Bulldogs posted a 30-28 win at Collins Park, Narrabri on Sunday.
Cameron’s three points boosted him to 11 points and a point lead over fellow Greater Northern Tiger teammate and West Lions enforcer Chris Vidler.
Vidler was suspended for Sunday’s clash with Oxley Diggers but returns for this weekend’s match up with North Tamworth.
Cameron will have the weekend off with the Blues scheduled to meet Wee Waa in lower grades only.
The Narrabri captain-coach was surprised to receive the three points.
“I would have definitely given those points up for a win,” Cameron told The Leader Sunday night.
Gunnedah’s Michael Cobb (2) and Josh Howarth (1) received the other points, their first for the season while West Lions fullback Sean Nean polled his first major B&F award for the season with an explosive display at Werris Creek’s David Taylor Park on Sunday.
West Lions trailed Oxley Diggers 17-14 at halftime after Robbie Bergan’s late field goal gave Diggers a three-point buffer. However, Wests returned in the second half with a much better completion rate and two brilliant pieces of play from the fullback they call Sheepy.
The first came in the first few minutes and from an attacking raid where Diggers defenders looked like they had West covered only for Nean to grubber through, pluck the ball from Diggers’ grasps and fire out a wide pass for Patrick McDonald to slide over. A few minutes later and he received an innocuous looking inside ball from Ben Jarvis 20m out and with the play going nowhere. However, Nean exploded with the ball through the defensive line and dive over in electric fashion to ignite a Lions side that went on to win 48-29.
“About time,” Nean said when told of his three point B&F award.
“We couldn’t hold the ball and complete any sets in the first half. It was a lot better in the second half,” the 26-year-old said.
While he has played a lot of his career at West as a centre he enjoys playing fullback and captain-coach Phil Beaton enjoys having him there where he can join in at any time of an attack, as evidenced by his two brilliant pieces early on in the second half.
Nean also can tackle and also enjoys putting a hit on rivals, a la Steve Matai, wherever he can.
Phil Beaton also joined Nean on four points when the Lions five-eighth picked up the two points for an enthusiastic display while Oxley Digger halfback Robbie Bergan received the one point.
