While the Tamworth Kangaroos were scoring a 90-point win in Gunnedah and the Saints-Swans game at Tamworth No. 1 Oval was called off, the Suns were fighting back with a plucky second half display at Narrabri.
The Eagles led 12.11 83 to 3.8 26 at half time but kicked just one goal in the third quarter as Nick O’Sullivan and his young Suns booted seven goals to get within 20 points.
They added another four goals in the final term to the Eagles one to go down 14.21 105 to 14.11 95.
It was another morale boosting game for a side that only returned to the TAFL for the first time in two decades this season.
It wasn’t enough to lift them off the bottom of the table but it gave them a big shot in the arm for the rest of the season.
Zach Collier kicked four goals for the Suns and captain-coach O’Sullivan two with Max Bienke, Dominic Brown, Matt Lather, and Stan Smith among the best with O’Sullivan and Collier.
Todd Fagan booted seven goals for the Eagles and Michael Miskle four as the home side relaxed in the second half.
Andrew Weymer, Matt Walters, Dan Nixon, Tom Denyer and Jesse Dixon were Eagles standouts.
At Gunnedah’s Wolseley Park the Tamworth Kangaroos found the same Suns second half spark to run away with their match.
Leading 9.9 63 to 5.6 36 at half time the Roos kicked nine third quarter goals before settling for a 22.16 148 to 8.10 58 win.
Daniel Leon booted four goals and Ben Mitchell three to lead a long Roo goal-kicking tally on a day where Leon, Mitchell, Ben Evenis, Drew Murden , Zeb Taylor and Brad Rees stood out for the visitors.
Peter Chapman, Brad Jenkinson and Ryan Cooper all kicked two goals apiece for Gunnedah with Al Hillard, Luke Curgenven and Andrew Swain also excelling.
