Police responded to reports of a crash in dense bushland at Wedderburn, south of Campbelltown, just before 5pm on Sunday.
NSW Sport Aircraft Club secretary Jock Anderson said he understood it was the pilot who died in the crash, which had left the aviation community "devastated".
"We've got a pretty tight-knit community out there," he said. "It's pretty shattering for us. I have no idea why this happened."
Rescuers worked to free the trapped passenger from the crash wreckage before airlifting her to Liverpool Hospital.
"We haven't had a fatality out there for two decades," Dr Anderson said.
"I know that the pilot has been a club member for 10 or 15 years," he said. "She's not an inexperienced pilot."
Dr Anderson said he believed the plane crashed just before landing.
"My understanding is it was on approach to landing when it stalled," he said.

The runway is a kilometre long, Dr Anderson said.
"It's definitely an adequate runway ... probably the best north-south runway outside of Mascot [airport]," he said.
