The Saints returned to the winners’ list with a 53-point win over the Eagles that elevated them to third on the table, just ahead of Gunnedah Bulldogs on percentages.
The Eagles, Bulldogs and Saints had entered the weekend in a three-way tie for third and the Saints and Bulldogs came out of it with four more competition points after their respective wins over Narrabri and Moree Suns.
For the Saints it was a welcome win in what is a huge rebuilding year under young captain-coach Hayden Chappel.
“Hayden’s doing a fantastic job,” Saints club captain and stalwart Nick Baird told The Leader.
“He’s got a lot of young guys who are starting to come through. Hayden and Luke (Selig) are still young but were outstanding against the Eagles. And Damon Harrison is just 16 but he’s the third midfielder with Hayden and Luke giving us great drive out of the middle. Then we have the twins, Bailey and Brennan Cosgrove. A couple of kids who played league but have come across and are going really well. They’ve been real livewires.
“We’ve also got young Andrew Schneider, he’s the younger brother of Chris, who has been with us for a few years now. He’s been fantastic. This year has been a big rebuilding year for us. It’s really pleasing to be a part of it.”
While the Saints play Tamworth Swans the Gunnedah Bulldogs host Tamworth Kangaroos at Wolseley Park tomorrow while the Moree Suns go to Narrabri to play Todd Dunn and his Eagles at Leitch Oval.
New England Nomads have the bye.
