Depp, 52, is in Queensland filming his role of Jack Sparrow for the latest installment in the Pirates of the Carribean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales.
The blockbuster is being filmed mostly around the Gold Coast but production moved to the Scenic Rim on Thursday for location shooting on Tamborine Mountain.
After filming wrapped on Thursday afternoon, Depp stopped to greet fans about 4.15pm as he was leaving the set on Licuala Drive, Tamborine Mountain.
Among those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the star was 11-year-old Tamborine Mountain schoolgirl Lyric Hatezic.
Lyric said she had been a huge fan of the movie star ever since watching him in Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows.
"We'd just got back from the shops and we saw about 20 people standing around some gates, so I hopped out and waited because I heard he might be there," she said.
"About five minutes later, a security guard came over and said he was going to stop and say hello, but we had to be quick because he was busy and couldn't get out of the car."
Several minutes later, Lyric said a black Range Rover drove through the gates, and Depp poked his head out, in full Jack Sparrow costume, to greet waiting fans.
"I couldn't believe it. He was saying hello to everyone and taking cards, and I got a video of it," she said.
"Then I got to shake his hand and he said hello to me, afterwards I was screaming and shaking."
Facebook was abuzz about more Depp sightings on Tamborine Mountain, including a rumour he had stopped into the Eagle Heights Mountain Resort for a beer.
When the Times contacted the resort, a spokesman said she could neither confirm or deny whether Depp and his entourage had stopped in.
