While Glen Innes beat Moree Boars 58-24 at Kerry Mead Park on Saturday, the Wombats went to Ashford yesterday to claim their best win of the season.
Their 14-point success left both the Wombats and Glen Innes with plenty of work to do though, three points adrift of equal fourth-placed Ashford and Armidale Rams.
Competition leaders Inverell Hawks and Moree Boomerangs both won on Saturday, the Hawks registering an 82-6 win over Guyra Spuds at the Guyra Sporting Complex while the Boomies had a tougher time of it at home when 44-18 victors over Armidale Rams.
Glen Innes Magpies kept their slim semi-final hopes alive with a big home win when they upset third-placed Moree Boars 58-24 at Kerry Mead Park, Glen Innes.
Centre Craig Browne crossed for four tries and hooker Jamie Watts a double in the win for the Nick Ehsman-coached side.
Watts was a deserving winner of the B&F points, with junior star Brayden Gallagher polling the two points from the referees.
Gallagher also snared the three points in the Under 18 B&F, scoring a try in his side’s 20-12 Under 18 win.
Three juniors also impressed for the Inverell Hawks in their 82-6 win at Guyra.
Matt Milsom, Mitch Lennon and Jack Jeffery all played good minutes for the Hawks in Saturday’s big win.
Hooker Guy Mepham led the way with another outstanding display while five-eighth Luke Deaves also impressed, crossing for three tries.
Aaron Quinlan, a big outside centre-winger, also excelled, scoring three first- half tries.
“He’s been a great addition to the club over the last month,” Inverell coach Peter Stevens said.
“We rested a few and came through unscathed.”
He is prepared for a desperate Armidale Rams at Varley Oval this weekend.
The Rams lost to the Boomerangs 44-18 on Saturday.
“We were right in it for most of the match,” Rams president Terry Carson said.
“They scored a couple of late tries to blow it out but we played pretty well.”
Garry Quinlan was outstanding for the Rams.
