After winning their second ANZ Championship last Sunday, the Firebirds made their way down Queen St Mall in a motorcade of roadsters led by captain Laura Geitz, who was greeted with "Geitzy" chants by the throng of supporters.

The Firebirds already have a set of keys to the city after winning the competition in 2011 and Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said they were very nearly granted access to their own Firebirds-themed City Cat.

"We took the girls out for a stroll down the river (when it launched)," he said.

"I had so many complaints from the harbour master from the beeping no way I could give them the keys to the city cat."

Geitz said the reception was an overwhelming one, capping off a week of celebrations that included their gala dinner on Thursday night.

"We had no idea it was going to be as overwhelming as this, to have so many Queenslanders here to celebrate with us," she said.

"Every morning we wake up and go, 'did that really happen last Sunday?' ".

Geitz said she hoped the Firebirds' success inspired the next generation of netballers, many of whom were in the crowd waiting for an autograph on Saturday morning.

Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt, appearing in the absence of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, congratulated the side on its thrilling victory.

"Never ever write off a Queenslander," he said.

"They only led for 14 seconds but it was the right 14 seconds."
