The Narrabri Blues captain-coach injured his right ankle in a tackle late in the second half of the Greater Northern Tigers Country Championship Tier 2 Final 32-22 loss to Riverina at Mudgee’s Glen Willow Stadium.
It made Sunday even tougher with late changes to his side and a couple of early injuries decimating his Blues.
While beaten by 66 points he was far from disappointed.
Disappointed with the result of course an d bemused that the score had blown out so far, but impressed by the way his young and inexperienced side had fought it out.
“Couldn’t have been prouder of them,” he said after the match as he hobbled down o the sheds.
“Their commitment to each other was outstanding.
“It wasn’t an ideal position we were in with so many changes and then the two early injuries.”
The likes of Jake Rumsby’s effort was inspiring.
The young prop dislocated his right shoulder in the second half, came off, had it put back in and went back on to play injured and virtually one-armed.
“That it goes back in so easy might be a good sign,” Cameron added.
Then there was Adam Rooney.
Named at halfback, but running on as lock, he mixed it strongly throughout against the bigger Bear pack.
Young second rower Sam Sadler also had a strong game .
He made plenty of tackles, a couple of bell ringers and was always there to take the ball up.
“Andrew Harvey played a full game in reserve grade too and then virtually a full game in first grade too,”Cameron said.
Beaten by so much, the Blues will be regrouping this week to ensure they don’t become the Oxley Diggers’ first victims.
Winless in their two seasons the Diggers take their home game against Narrabri to Manilla Showground on Sunday due to the unavailability of the new Scully Park.
o The Oxley Diggers-Narrabri game isn’t the only Group 4 change either.
Walcha and Werris Creek will play their Group 4 Second Division match at Captain Cook Park, Walcha on Sunday.
The Peter Blom Shield Ladies League Tag game starts 12.30pm with the G4 Shield game kicking off about 1.30pm.
The Walcha Roos beat the Magpies in last year’s corresponding match as well as knocking the Magpies out of the premiership race in a finals match at the same venue as well.
o Group 4 Referees Appointments, as well as Greater Northern Draws and Tables in Sport Details.
