South Tamworth Public School students wrapped up their transport unit by making cars from cardboard boxes and recycled materials and “drove” them around the road safety park.
Before they were able to take to the road, though, they had to pass a written and practical test to earn their “licences”.
Year 1 teacher Elizabeth Goff said everyone passed, but there were a couple of minor accidents when they took to the road.
“We had quite a few parents who came along and were involved,” she said.
“We had a toolkit, so we were able to have some of the parents who were engineers able to put them back onto the road. Most of them followed their road rules.”
Mrs Goff said the day was “just fabulous”.
“This was a good culmination for our unit that we’ve been doing, studying various forms of transport,” she said.
“It just all makes it interesting and gives it a bit of a practical form.” She said the students enjoyed working with their families at home building their vehicles.
“We gave them some ideas, but they did some phenomenal things, including a horse and carriage, army tanks, police cars, vintage cars and hot rods,” she said.
“They came up with exceptional stuff and it’s amazing. That was really beneficial for them, because it brings the family together and was something that could really involve the dads a lot, where they could use their skills and interests and they passed them on to their kids.”
