Academy Award-winning composer James Horner – killed in a light plane crash on Tuesday – was among the most acclaimed composers of his generation.

Think of a blockbuster movie with a soaring score, and there's a good chance Horner wrote the music.

Here are some of his most memorable works beginning, of course, with Titanic.

TITANIC, 1997

Horner took home two Oscars for his work on this film, including Best Dramatic Score. The other, of course, was Best Original Song for My Heart Will Go On (an accolade he shared with Will Jennings, who wrote the lyrics).

Powerhouse vocalist Celine Dion helped make this the No. 1 single of 1998 – and one of the best-selling songs in recent history. It topped the charts all over the world, with sales so far of more than 15 million.

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, 1982

Though Horner had worked on other films, including The Lady in Red (1979) and Wolfen (1981), his dramatic Star Trek II score brought him mainstream success.

BRAVEHEART, 1995

Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, the Braveheart soundtrack was nominated for a swag of awards, including an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. It was the second of Horner's three collaborations with Mel Gibson as director.

APOLLO 13, 1995

This stirring, spectacular score has become synonymous with space exploration itself over the past two decades. Think of any space documentary released since 1995, and it's likely to feature a chunk of the Apollo 13 soundtrack (or some close approximation).

Indeed, 1995 was a good year for Horner – he competed against himself at the Academy Awards, with Apollo 13 and Braveheart both vying for Best Original Dramatic Score. (In the end, the statue went to Luis Enriquez Bacalov for The Postman.)

AVATAR, 2009

Twelve years after working with James Cameron on Titanic, Horner re-teamed with the director on the science-fiction epic that would break Titanic's record.

Horner missed out on the Best Original Score Oscar in 2010. But his music is considered just as important as Avatar's special effects in creating the groundbreaking alien world.

FIELD OF DREAMS, 1989

This was another busy year for Horner: Field of Dreams earned him a Best Original Score Oscar nomination while his work on on the Civil War drama Glory won him a Grammy.

ALIENS, 1986

Horner has described composing for this 1986 James Cameron film as a "nightmare". He arrived in England, expecting a finished film for him to work on, only to find filming hadn't even finished.

"To add insult to injury, the facilities were 30 years old," Horner told one interviewer. "We were barely able to patch in synthesizers."

Somehow, Horner cobbled together a score good enough for an Oscar nomination, but he was personally unhappy with the result and assumed he'd never work with Cameron again.

Indeed, they didn't speak for almost a decade – until Cameron heard Horner's impressive Braveheart soundtrack and asked him to write the Titanic score.
