For two decades the familiar yellow and green club bus, run and kept roadworthy by the Wright brothers, has ferried players and supporters to matches throughout the Northern Inland.
However the long haul to Newcastle is a bit beyond the grand old machine.
“We don’t think the old bus will make it down and back,” first grade coach Joe Campbell said.
“So we’ve hired a coach to take the players and supporters.”
Today’s FFA cup match is one of the biggest in the club’s history.
Last year’s appearance in the NIF Premier League first grade grand final against Oxley Vale Attunga was a huge day for the club that ended in a 6-2 loss.
Campbell is hoping for a far better result today, although his side goes in against the top Newcastle side as huge underdogs.
It’s also a big day for Campbell, who is in his first term as head coach.
“It’s my first year coaching the senior side,” he said.
“But it’s not about me.
“It’s a great achievement for the club and its sponsors,” he said
The Scorpions are making it a big weekend and travelled down yesterday, stopping overnight and then heading out to the Speer’s Point ground at some stage to watch a bit of the action before their 4pm kickoff against the Magic.
Back home, the NIF Premier League continues with games in Armidale, Narrabri, Moree and Gunnedah.
Reigning premiers OVA take an under-strength side to Moree, North Companions are away for the second successive week when tackling Namoi United at Hogan Oval, Narrabri, Tamworth FC travel to Wolseley Park, Gunnedah for a crucial matchup with Gunnedah United and Northern Conference leaders Joeys FC travel to Doody Park, Armidale to play East Armidale.
