The two clubs from Sydney’s north had been longtime foes in the Sydney premiership before it became the National Rugby League.
These days the North Sydney Bears are a feeder club to South Sydney Rabbitohs and will take great enjoyment in beating the Sea Eagles, NSW Rugby League chief executive officer Dave Trodden said.
The NSWRL boss was in Tamworth this week helping announce the staging of next year’s City-Country Origin game at the transformed Scully Park Regional Sporting Precinct.
Today the West Lions-Oxley Diggers match will have the distinction of being the first game played on the new locale when they kick off around 3.30pm.
About 6pm though the North Sydney Bears and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have the distinction of being the first Sydney sides to run out on the $2.8million
renewal.
The match isn’t just a one-off to help promote the opening day, Trodden said.
“It’s our country round,” he said.
We’ve got one game here, one at Muswellbrook, one at Port Macquarie, Goulburn and Newcastle.
“The Warriors are also taking their game to a regional centre over in New Zealand too.
“It’s something we’ve started this year, taking the game to the bush, and we will play a round in the country areas every year.
“It’s predominantly to promote the game.
And there is a fair bit of talent in these sides too.
“David Williams (better known as the Wolfman) is on the wing for Manly,” Trodden said.
“He’s played State Of Origin and for Australia and trying to get back into their NRL side.
“There is a lifelong rivalry there between Norths and Manly too.
“It always make it an interesting clash.”
